- Focus on the person, not their disabilities听
- Do not infantilize a person with a disability.听Treat them as you would anyone else
- Speak directly to the individual, not the interpreter, companion, or attendant听
- Listen carefully, wait to reply until you are certain the individual has finished speaking听
- Use person first language听鈥people with disabilities鈥听rather than disabled person.听Ex: Reference specific disabilities when needed, like person with epilepsy or person who uses a wheelchair听鈥
- Use the correct words: Say听鈥disability.鈥听Do not say听鈥handicapped, special needs, or听differently-abled.鈥听
- Do NOT use derogatory words such as 鈥midget,鈥听or 鈥渃rippled鈥听or terms like 鈥victim of,鈥听鈥suffers from鈥 or听鈥stricken with a certain diagnosis鈥听
- Do not touch or interact with a service animal without permission听
- Do not assume a person needs assistance. Wait to be asked before offering help.听Ex: Do not start pushing a person鈥檚 wheelchair without permission听as many consider it an extension of their physical being听
- Be sensitive about personal contact and space.听Do not touch or move a person鈥檚 mobility or other devices without permission听
- Respect an individual鈥檚 privacy regarding听their disability, unless听they initiate听a conversation. Do not ask intrusive and inappropriate questions听such as 鈥淲hat is wrong with you?鈥听or 鈥淗ow do you use the restroom?鈥听
- If 测辞耻鈥檙别听unfamiliar with a disability, 诲辞苍鈥檛听make assumptions.听滨迟鈥檚听better to ask the person if necessary听to explain their condition, or the barrier they are encountering听
- Introduce yourself and say when you are leaving if interacting with听a person who is blind听
- Make sure there is a clear view of your face and mouth when communicating, especially for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing听
- Do not make a decision听on behalf of a person with a disability regarding听what they can or cannot do
