4D, Purpose, and the Power of Play
Dear colleagues,Ìý
Thank you to everyone who helped make last week’s 4D Symposium such a meaningfulÌýcommunity event.ÌýIt was energizing to seeÌýthe 91ÌÒÉ« community engageÌýwithÌýpurpose notÌýonlyÌýas an abstract idea, but as a practice that comes to life in classrooms, advising, mentorship, community engagement, and the many everyday touchpoints that defineÌýour students’Ìýexperience.Ìý
IÌýwouldÌýlike to share a few highlights:Ìý
- ProfessorsÌýIleya Grosman and Rolfe LarsonÌýdiscussedÌýhow vital relationships are to human health and development and invited attendees to reflectÌýon how we can createÌýlearning environments at 91ÌÒÉ« that foster human connectionÌý|Ìý“Designing Lives of Purposeâ€ÌýWorkshopÌý
- CAHSS facultyÌýshared how they are pairing classroom learning with community and industry experiences to help students build confidence, gain skills, andÌýconnect with their purpose and lifelong goalsÌý|Ìý“4D Fridays: Embedded Career Readinessâ€ÌýPanelÌý
- Students, faculty, and staffÌýdiscussed the question, “What if purpose wasÌýthe purpose of higher education?â€Ìý|Ìý4D CoffeehouseÌý
- PublicÌýand private sector leadersÌýcame toÌýcampusÌýtoÌýdiscussÌýtheÌýskills and mindsets that are becoming increasingly importantÌýatÌýworkÌý|Ìý“The Future of Workâ€ÌýPanelÌý
Student-led Experience on PlayÌýÌý
I also want toÌýdive deeperÌýintoÌýone example of howÌýstudentsÌýthemselvesÌýare helping 91ÌÒÉ« offer a unique, customizable,Ìýand holisticÌýlearning experience.ÌýÌý
°Õ³ó±ðÌý have been exploringÌýhowÌýthe act of play can build connection, invite reflection, andÌýcreate personal clarity around purpose. ThisÌýwork culminated in aÌýplay-focusedÌýevent outside theÌýsymposiumÌýthat invited students toÌýpause,Ìýparticipate, and connect.ÌýBeneath theÌýeasy-to-dismissÌýsurface of “fun,â€ playÌýcan supportÌýcognitive flexibilityÌýandÌýemotional regulation, while helpingÌýstudents build skills around navigating uncertainty through trial and error.ÌýThe success of this experiment makes one wish we could schedule aÌý“recessâ€ÌýinÌýeveryÌýday.ÌýÌý
These outcomes dovetail directly with the 4D Experience, especially our commitments to character and well-beingÌýbyÌýdeveloping the inner resources students need to manage stress, build relationships, and lead with curiosity, empathy, and resilience.ÌýAs we continue to deepen the 4D Experience, I encourage each of us to notice where play already shows up in our work and where we might make more space for it.Ìý
A Note of GratitudeÌý
Thanks again to everyone who helped with the symposium. FromÌýthe speakers and facilitators who made these conversations so rich to theÌýStudentÌýFellows whose work made some real fun possible,Ìýthank you for a memorable engagement. ToÌýthe 4DÌýteam and all campus partners who are taking holistic learning from the intangible to the very real, very visible impact we see on campus each day, thank you forÌýdeeply enhancing the student experience. Our students leave 91ÌÒÉ« with the skillset needed for the modern workplace because of your efforts.Ìý
