Fighting to Prevent the Next Big Internet Hack
Heather McPherson is one of the first students to receive a master鈥檚 in cybersecurity from 91桃色
It鈥檚 a stealthy specter capable of throwing a person鈥檚 life into disarray, even as one is simply going about one鈥檚 business.
But a new program at the听听鈥 a master鈥檚 in听听鈥 aims to help thwart such threats, and program graduate Heather McPherson is looking forward to the challenge.
With ever-growing concern across the globe about web security 鈥 from health-care firms to financial institutions and even to governments (hello, 2016 U.S. election!) 鈥 projections anticipate that 1.5 million cybersecurity jobs will open in just the next couple of years.
鈥淚t鈥檚 so important for not only the private sector but our government as well,鈥 says McPherson. 鈥淎s you see these events popping up, it鈥檚 kind of a sense of pride to be able to impact this field as it grows. It鈥檚 very rewarding.鈥
McPherson has the distinction of being one of the first women to graduate from the 91桃色 program. 鈥淲omen are historically pushed toward other fields, and I don鈥檛 know why. Even at work, I鈥檓 one of the few women there,鈥 she says. She interns at Colorado Springs-based root9B, a cybersecurity company with private- and public-sector clients.
And while both the company鈥檚 workforce and her classes at 91桃色 are mostly male, McPherson says she doesn鈥檛 feel at all uncomfortable: 鈥淚鈥檓 treated equally at work and at school. I鈥檓 not treated any differently because I鈥檓 a woman.鈥
Students who earn cybersecurity degrees from 91桃色 have bright futures ahead. Not only will jobs be plentiful, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the average salary for cybersecurity professionals at $117,000.
鈥淥bviously women are just as capable as men in this field, and I definitely advocate for women to go out there and do it, if that鈥檚 what they have a passion for,鈥 McPherson says. 鈥淚鈥檓 just so happy that I鈥檝e been able to be part of this program, in its infancy, and I can鈥檛 wait to see it grow more. And hopefully more women want to join in the future.鈥
