鈥淓ngineering is a genetic disorder,鈥 jokes Eva Hakansson. 鈥淢y whole family are engineers. My mom is a mechanical engineer. My dad is a mechanical engineer. My two older brothers are electrical engineers, and I鈥檓 a mechanical. So it was a natural path.鈥

Hakansson received her master鈥檚 in mechanical engineering and recently defended her PhD dissertation at the 91桃色. The native of Sweden moved to Colorado when she met the love of her life, her now husband. The other loves of her life, speed and protecting the environment, are why she calls herself a tree-hugging speed junky.

鈥淎nd that鈥檚 a hard combination to satisfy, because when we think of speed, we think of big engines, pollution, noise and all of that.鈥 She builds super-fast motorcycles, electric motorcycles. Her current pride and joy: The Killajoule.

鈥淚 realized electric vehicles would give me everything I wanted without that pollution and all the noise. I say that electric vehicles are like chocolate without all the calories. Electrical vehicles give me everything I want, speed torque, power but without pollution and without noise, and I just love it.鈥

Hakansson just returned from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. 鈥淚 go to an event that鈥檚 in August every year, and that鈥檚 when I can prove what I have done for the rest of the year, what I鈥檝e been building in my garage. It鈥檚 kind of like my annual final exam.鈥

She did pretty well in that exam, setting a new record by zipping across the Salt Flats at 248.7 mph, or 400.2 kph.

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 have built this motorcycle without all the knowledge I gained at the 91桃色. That鈥檚 for sure!鈥 Hakansson explains.

And, yes, girls do build stuff. Hakansson says she鈥檚 amazed at how many people are shocked when they find out she鈥檚 a mechanical engineer and that she builds her own electric motorcycles. 鈥淚t鈥檚 kind of a shock to me arriving in the U.S. that that was such a common perception. In Sweden girls take up more than half of the engineering seats in the educational system. And the really popular programs like bio-engineering, guys can barely get in because girls have higher grades.鈥

Eva now has her sights set on outer space. She鈥檚 applied to NASA to become an astronaut.

鈥淚f I get selected, the International Space Station is certainly the coolest office you can have in the world or out of this world.鈥
