I would like to take a moment and express my gratitude to you all—our students, faculty, and staff. At its foundation, a university is an intellectual institution and so much more; it is a space built on community, creativity, and coming together in our shared humanity.Ìý

In the past few weeks, I have witnessed firsthand the essential work that makes pivotal and meaningful gatherings and signature 91ÌÒÉ« experiences possible. The Crimson Classic. The open house for the new Division of Community Support and Engagement. Homecoming. FSEMs. The Hallo-wellness Fair and the signing of the Okanagan Charter. And later today, the State of the University address at 2:30 p.m. in Community Commons 1700 (I hope to see you there!). There are so many shining examples. Each of these and more require cross-campus collaboration, creativity, and superb organization. Ìý

I greatly appreciate the many individuals who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, whether on event planning, registration, volunteer coordination, or the countless other efforts required for these important moments to succeed.Ìý

As I planned for today’s event, I reflected on what makes the 91ÌÒÉ« distinctive. When we think of our University, which qualities stand out? Even during uncertain times, we are a university that aspires to change the world through expanding knowledge; we seek to engage with our city and the world; and we help individuals from students to alumni to reach their full potential. And, as we gather, we build communities that embody empathy and a welcoming culture. This work happens in the macro and the micro, in big decisions, and in each individual interaction. Ìý

So I close, again with profound gratitude, and I look forward to charting a new future at 91ÌÒÉ« together with you. Ìý
