Sport coaching education programsÌýatÌýthe undergraduate and graduate levelÌýhave been on the riseÌýin recent years.ÌýGiven the lack of regulations within theÌý,Ìýwe find that we are often without a general standard for competent coaching at various levels. Undergraduate programs typicallyÌýprepareÌýnoviceÌýcoaches,Ìýwho gainÌýsome toÌýlittle practicalÌýexperienceÌýby the time they graduate.ÌýThese aspiring coaches may be readyÌýforÌýsome sort of entry intoÌýthe coaching profession, but are they prepared to work with athletes who truly rely on them?ÌýÌý

Master’s degree programs, on the other hand,ÌýtypicallyÌýcontainÌýcoaches of varying backgrounds and experiences, who areÌýcurrentlyÌýcoachingÌýathletesÌýat an assortment of levels.ÌýButÌýoften,Ìýwhen coaching students graduate from these programs,Ìýthey obtainÌýpositionsÌýoutsideÌýthe scopeÌýof what we mightÌýassume.Ìý

Consider a typical conversation I have with online students in theÌýÌýhere at the 91ÌÒÉ«:ÌýÌý

Dr. K:ÌýÌýHiÌýMackenzie, great to hear from you. How is coaching going?Ìý

Mackenzie:ÌýCoaching’s going great. We’re just heading into theÌýNCAAÌýDivisionÌýIÌýÌýfinalÌýchampionship weekend.ÌýÌý

Dr. K: Good luck, keep me posted.ÌýRow hard, and row fast.ÌýI hope you all do great.Ìý

Mackenzie:ÌýThanks!ÌýFor now,ÌýI wanted to pick your brain onÌýgoing into Physical Therapy School.ÌýÌý

Dr. K:ÌýInteresting….Ìýare you thinking of transitioningÌýout ofÌýhigh-performanceÌýrowing coaching?ÌýÌý

Mackenzie:ÌýPossibly. I’m thinkingÌýabout my interests inÌýbiomechanics research in relation to rowingÌýperformanceÌýandÌýsport injuriesÌý[thatÌýI learned about inÌýyour course].ÌýI thought physical therapy school would be a goodÌýfit with my experience,ÌýandÌýstill allow me to specialize in working with athletes.ÌýWould this be applicable?Ìý

Dr. K: Yes, absolutely. We’ve hadÌýaÌýcouple other students go this route,Ìýtoo. That is,ÌýbeginningÌýa Physical Therapy programÌýafterÌýgraduating from ourÌýMaster’sÌýprogram. IÌýhave toÌýtell you though,ÌýphysicalÌýtherapyÌýschool admissions are tough, soÌýit’s good that you’re thinking about thisÌýnow.ÌýÌý
Mackenzie:ÌýOkay. How do you think I should start the process?ÌýÌý

Dr. K:ÌýFirst, check out some of the different types of programs and what they are lookingÌýfor in the application requirements. Also, Dr. G,ÌýDr.ÌýMills, and I just recorded a Ìýto help coaching-students navigateÌýbeyondÌýourÌýmaster’sÌýlevel program. I’ll shoot it over to you, as it willÌýprovide an informativeÌýview of navigating these programs, how to set yourself up forÌýgetting into these programs, and some other things to consider.ÌýÌý

Over the years,Ìýa fewÌýof ourÌýcoaching-studentsÌýhaveÌýtransitionedÌýintoÌýbecoming aÌýphysical therapist,ÌýaÌýcoach developer with a PhD in sport coaching,Ìýor other fields of study withÌýupper-levelÌýdoctorateÌýdegrees.Ìý

But, what aboutÌýstudents who hold anÌýundergraduate orÌýmaster’sÌýdegreeÌýin coaching?ÌýÌýÌý

ThisÌýleadsÌýusÌýbackÌýto theÌýoriginalÌýquestion:Ìý
