What makes a successful sport team? (It starts with culture.)
A real-life account from a seasoned strength and conditioning coach.
Hello there, fellow coaches!ÌýI’m a strength and conditioning coach.ÌýI have workedÌýwithin aÌývariety of settings, movedÌýfrom coast to coast,ÌýandÌýI’veÌýlearned a thing or twoÌýaboutÌýwhat makes aÌýsuccessful sports teamÌýalong the way. Quick spoiler alert: this often includes creatingÌýa positive experience andÌýcultureÌýof trust and respectÌýamongÌýthe athletes, teams, and clients you work with.
I am currently a strength coach in the tactical settingÌýwith the United States military. IÌýcan’tÌýdisclose exactly where or with whom I work,Ìýas theÌýcommunicationsÌýmanagerÌýhas advised meÌýnot to.ÌýI know, it’s not ideal, but it’s a drawback I’ll take given that working with the military has been the most rewarding experience in my coaching career thus far.
Ìý
The key to success is more than just a training planÌý
Ìý
When it comes toÌýbuilding a successful team, there are many angles we can consider. Sometimes, strength coaches get caught up in the set, rep,ÌýorÌýloading scheme. Others will eliminate a specific type of exercise,Ìýor demonizeÌýcertain exercises,Ìýbecause they’veÌýhad a negative experience withÌýit (or theyÌýdon’t feel thatÌýknowÌýhowÌýto coach itÌýeffectively).ÌýÌý
Ìý
We couldÌýstart a longÌýdebate about which method is best to improve theÌýphysical strength and performance of athletes.ÌýOr,Ìýwe could dwell on the wish that we could just recruit “betterâ€ players. However,ÌýifÌýyou’re like me, youÌýmay not have the power or bandwidth to simply recruit better players. So, what do we doÌýwhen we can’tÌýrecruitÌýonlyÌý5-starÌýathletesÌýfor a division 3 unfunded sport?ÌýÌý
Ìý
What does your organization value?ÌýÌý
Ìý
First, let’s considerÌýthree things regarding the organization you coach at:ÌýÌý
-
the ecosystemÌýÌý
-
the coachingÌýstaffÌýÌý
-
the cultureÌý(and how this can affect theÌýoutcome)Ìý
Ìý
Here are a few important questions to ask yourself:Ìý
-
What are the values ofÌýyour organization?Ìý(Sometimes the stated values differ from the values that are carried out.) Do they value high-quality performance from their sportÌýteams each year?Ìý
-
WhatÌýis the physical space like?ÌýIs it conducive to promoting a positive experience for all involved?Ìý
-
Who makes up theÌýcoaching staff? Is it peopleÌýwhoÌýwantÌýtoÌýcoach?ÌýIs it a teacher whoÌýneeds the additional income?ÌýÌý
-
How qualified is the sportsÌýmedicineÌýteam? Are they fully integratedÌýwith the coaching staff and team?ÌýÌý
Ìý
These are all important considerationsÌýwhen trying to improve athletic performanceÌýand build a successful team.ÌýÌý
We can look at Alabama Football as an example.ÌýIt isÌýclearÌýwhyÌýthisÌýfootballÌýprogramÌýis always ranked numberÌýone. The schoolÌývalues thisÌýprogramÌýhighly, andÌýallocates resources in order for itÌýto be the bestÌýin the country.ÌýThe Athletic Director hires qualified, experienced coaches from around the country.ÌýIt’s aÌýfully funded programÌýwith a robustÌýsports medicine staff, including nutritionists and cognitive specialists. These are all reasons why Alabama is the premier place to play football.Ìý
Ìý
So, what led them to greatness? I have a few speculations:ÌýÌý
-
The philosophy behind theÌýentireÌýorganizationÌýhasÌýremainedÌýthe same since the beginning.ÌýThey don’t joke around.ÌýThey do what they say.Ìý
-
They don’tÌýcut cornersÌýin preparing the team for success both on and off the field.ÌýÌý
-
They areÌýstaffed with highly qualified coaches.ÌýÌý
-
TheÌýteam environment is top notch.ÌýThese players are given the opportunity to improve all life skills, not only football-related skills.Ìý
Ìý
To continue lookingÌýat the Alabama football example, let’sÌýconsiderÌýthe coaching staff.ÌýÌý
-
What is it about this staff that gets the best out of these players?ÌýÌý
-
How is it that they are successful yearÌýafter year?ÌýÌý
-
Why is it that the school investsÌýso much into the coaching staff?ÌýÌý
-
Do the philosophies of each coach exemplify the expectations?ÌýÌý
Ìý
These are all questions to consider when interviewing for a coaching position. By asking these questions, you can more easily filter out any organizations that you may not want to be a part of.Ìý
Creating a strong culture starts with YOU [the coach]Ìý
Ìý
There are many ways to create a strongÌýand inclusiveÌýcultureÌýwithinÌýyour team,Ìýsome ofÌýwhich I hope to tackle within thisÌýblog post.ÌýHaving gained insight from my own failures and triumphs throughout my 10-year coaching tenure, I feel compelled to share.Ìý
Ìý
The very first thing a coach can do to help adopt a strongÌýteamÌýculture is to look inward,ÌýbeginningÌýwith yourÌýownÌýcoaching philosophy.ÌýWhenÌýI made mistakes as a coach, it wasÌýtypicallyÌýbecause I was trying to be something I was not. Even though I spoke highly about my coaching philosophyÌý(which was nicelyÌýwritten down), I came to realize that it was all talk. I never truthfully “lived outâ€ my philosophy.ÌýÌý
Ìý
One day,ÌýIÌýwasÌýcalled outÌýfor thisÌýby a professional athlete. They saidÌýto me,Ìýand I quote,Ìý“Bro, you say one thing,ÌýandÌýexpect a high standard,Ìýbut you can’t even hold yourself to this standard.ÌýSo why do you expect this of us?â€ÌýÌý
Ìý
This shook me. And he was right. IÌýexpectedÌýgreatnessÌýfrom these athletes,ÌýwhileÌýin my own lifeÌýI was making someÌýpoor decisions. My training was solid, but my nutrition was terrible, my finances were a mess, my relationshipsÌýwere suffering,Ìýand I wasn’t taking care of myself.ÌýI held myself to a mediocre standard at best.ÌýÌý
Ìý
IÌýrealized I would never be able to createÌýaÌýpositive teamÌýcultureÌýifÌýIÌýdidn’t participate inÌýitÌýmyself.ÌýWhy is it that I wanted the best for others, but neglected to take care of the one person I spendÌýthe most time with:Ìý me?ÌýÌý
Ìý
I had toÌýchange my approach to coaching, and to life.ÌýInÌýshort,Ìýit was timeÌýto create a new philosophy, one thatÌýIÌýmyselfÌýcouldÌýfulfill every day.ÌýÌý
Ìý
The work that is necessary to cultivate a strong team cultureÌýtakes time and effort.ÌýÌý
Ìý
The first step is to emulate the culture that you want to create.ÌýFor me, this meant the creation ofÌýa solid nutrition and wellness plan.ÌýWith that sort of planÌýin place,ÌýI could more honestly speak to these values, and expect others to place value on their ownÌýhealth and wellness.ÌýÌý
Ìý
Being strong is fun.ÌýLiving aÌýhealthy,Ìýlow-stress,ÌýandÌýfinancially stableÌýlifeÌýisÌýevenÌýbetter. InÌýtheÌýpast, I couldn’tÌýshow up as my best selfÌýbecauseÌýI brought my stress and worry with me every day.ÌýAs a result, my coaching suffered, and this impacted the team.ÌýÌý
Ìý
With my new coaching philosophy, I vowed thatÌýI wouldn’t force my team to do anything that I wasn’t willing to do myself.ÌýI alsoÌýmade it a point toÌýaddress each athlete by their nameÌýdaily.ÌýMy goal was to create a culture in which the athletes felt that their coach cared about them as human beings.ÌýI pushed each athlete on the team to be the best they could be, both on and off the field. I expected greatness, but this time around, IÌýcould hold myself to the same standard.ÌýAnd that changed everything.ÌýÌý
Ìý
A coach’s jobÌýshould includeÌýcultivating a strong cultureÌýandÌýmaking anÌýimpactÌýon the athletes and teams they serve.ÌýThis responsibilityÌýbringsÌýwonderfulÌýexperiences along withÌýit andÌýcan alsoÌýinduceÌýsome difficult challenges.ÌýÌý
To coach is to motivate, mentor,ÌýsupportÌýand challengeÌý
Ìý
Coaches have many lessons to teach,Ìýwhile learning our own lessons along the way.ÌýWe experience athletes struggling, and in these moments,ÌýweÌýaim to support them and help them through.ÌýThere may even be instances when coaches need to show some tough love to help anÌýathlete grow. Coaches carry the responsibility of keeping their athletes motivated, especially when confronted withÌýaÌýlong arduous season.ÌýÌý

ThisÌýroleÌýcomesÌýwith challenges,Ìýsuccesses,ÌýandÌýunknowns (I never anticipated that I wouldÌýhelpÌýan athleteÌýthrough rehab).ÌýWe are there to help athletesÌýtrain to gain muscle,Ìýto helpÌýthemÌýattainÌýthe best physical condition, and ultimately achieve their goals.ÌýÌý
Ìý
All things considered, improving athletic performance requires you to take a tailored approach with the X’s and O’s. Stick to that plan and hold steadfast through the season.ÌýDoes the entire enterprise surrounding the club expect greatness?ÌýDoes the coaching staff shareÌýa singular goal?ÌýDoes your coaching philosophyÌýmatch your personal and coaching standards? Do you put the work in to ensure the growth ofÌýa strongÌýculture withinÌýthe team?ÌýDo you help guideÌýyour athletes throughÌýtheÌýseason,Ìýboth on and off the field?ÌýÌý
Ìý
If you can coverÌýtheseÌýaspects,ÌýyourÌýteam willÌýworkÌýmore effectively together and ultimately become more successful, regardless ofÌýwhich players have beenÌýrecruited to the team.
